Introducing Sweet Crowns
Sweet Crowns is a Black woman-owned solution brand dedicated to protecting and preserving precious curls for little ones. Dreamed up by Dana Taylor-Hart, this innovative soft-goods product bridges the gap between hair care and home goods, introducing a new category in bedding.
The Opportunity
Sweet Crowns set out to develop a patentable solution to address two key concerns:
Babies grow quickly, leading to frequent replacements of apparel and accessories.
Children with textured hair require extra-sensitive and protective solutions to maintain hair health.
Rather than following a formula-based approach, Sweet Crowns focused on the realities of motherhood—creating simple, practical, and on-the-go solutions. The challenge was to design a product that would remain useful beyond infancy, providing long-term value for families.
Our Solution
Through extensive market research, we identified an opportunity for a "grow-with-you" product that would support hair health from infancy through early childhood. We collaborated with Sweet Crowns' founder to explore various product shapes and functionalities. After multiple rounds of prototyping, material testing, and user feedback, we refined the final product: the Sweet Crowns Satin 2-in-1 Crib Mattress Slip.
Product Development & Technical Design:
Material Selection: After testing various fabrics, we selected a premium Satin Tricot due to its durability, breathability, and gentle texture. It provides a silky surface to reduce friction and support delicate hair growth.
Adjustable Fit: The product features a stretchable spandex bottom panel that conforms to various mattress sizes, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
Usability Across Stages: Designed to function beyond infancy, the product transitions seamlessly to accommodate a toddler-sized pillow, maximizing its utility.
Multiple Sampling Rounds: Through iterative testing, we fine-tuned the material weave, stitching reinforcements, and overall construction to balance durability with a luxurious feel.
Practical Care: The fabric was treated and tested for longevity, ensuring it remains effective through multiple washes without requiring special care instructions.
